Abstract

3D printing is becoming a pervasive technology in a variety of applications. The main advantage of these solutions is that the structural complexity of the printed objects does not affect time and cost of the printing process. 3D printing democratized the concept of industrial production, indeed today it is possible to use 3D printing to manufacture arbitrary shapes. One limitation of the existing solutions is that they allow the manufacturing using a single material only (e.g. ABS, PLA, resin, etc.). This reduces considerably the application domains, because it is also desirable the creation of 3D-printed pieces with continuously varying physical properties. Although multimaterial 3D printers are increasingly available, they are extremely expensive and they rely on a limited set of materials. After an overview of the 3D printing technologies, we will propose a novel method that, using geometric patterns, aims to approximate the physical behavior of a given material employing single-material 3D printing.
