Lattice deformations couple to electrons in graphene by giving rise to an effective gauge field [1,2]. This unique feature leads to the possibility of modifying the electronic properties by applying strain to the lattice [3,4]. The main properties of the interaction between electrons and long wavelength lattice deformations will be reviewed.
The shortest path tour problem (SPTP) consists of finding a shortest path from a given origin node s to a given destination node d in a directed graph with nonnegative arc lengths with the constraint that the optimal path P should successively and sequentially pass through at least one node from given disjoint node subsets. In this talk, it will proved that the SPTP belongs to the complexity class P and several alternative techniques will be presented to solve it. Furthermore, some variants of the SPTP will be discussed and proved to be special facility location problems.
I will presents new observational tests of the LCDM paradigm. In particular I will focus on the following questions: are there universal dark matter profiles? is there dark matter substructure? What is the equation of state of dark energy? I will discuss the crucial need to uderstand the interplay between baryons and dark matter as part of the paradigm.
"True consent", as Bacon has it, "is that which consists in the coincidence of free judgements after due examination". However, as Montessori has it, "we cannot be free if we are not independent". The persistence of economic hardship, where national governments are no longer able to fund basic research, it is hard evidence suggesting the need to achieve financial independence.
The aim of this seminar is to describe and discuss our method to achieve financial independence. We introduce the notion of financial curriculum, to be written in addition to the academic curriculum, describe how to read and write one such document, and how to profit from it using a step-by-step algorithm to perform the transition from the state of financial dependence to the state of financial independence. The method is of general applicability. As case study, we show the financial curriculum of a researcher, a professor, the Department of Computer Science, and the University of Pisa.
Recent experimental observations have shown that quantum coherence plays an important role in photosynthetic energy transport. Photosynthetic molecules are large and complex, containing both regular structures, such as rings of chromophores, and apparently irregular structures. This talk proposes a general theory of the role of symmetry and asymmetry in quantum transport in biomolecules. I will show that collective coherent effects, including entanglement, can give rise to substantial enhancements of excitonic lifetimes and energy transport.
